Alabama's New Notification Requirement for "Mass Separations": Employment Law Manual Updated

A new regulation in Alabama requires employers to notify the Alabama Unemployment Compensation Call Center whenever they institute a "mass separation" of employees, meaning any group termination that applies to more than one individual.

The Involuntary Terminations: Alabama section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated to reflect this new requirement.

Alabama employers that typically use group terminations or layoffs should familiarize themselves with the new regulation and ensure compliance by contacting the Unemployment Compensation Call Center proactively.

Importantly, Alabama does not have its own version of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, meaning Alabama employers are not obligated to provide advance notice to employees of mass layoffs of terminations unless the employer and the scenario fall under federal WARN Act parameters.
