California Passes Paid Sick Leave Law: Employment Law Manual, Chart Updated

On September 10, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014. Effective July 1, 2015, California employees who work 30 or more days in one year are entitled to up to 24 hours or three days of paid sick leave each year. Sick time accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked. Accrued sick time may be used beginning on the 90th day of employment. The law prohibits employers from discriminating or retaliating against an employee who requests paid sick days. Employers must also satisfy specified posting, notice and recordkeeping requirements.
