Indiana and Maryland Child Labor Laws Amended: Employment Law Manual, Quick Reference Chart Updated

New legislation will soon change the child labor hours of work restrictions in Indiana and the child labor work permit requirements in Maryland.

Effective July 1, 2014, the Indiana bill will:

  • Authorize a minor between the ages of 16 and 17 to work until 11:00 p.m. on a night followed by a school day if the employer has obtained written permission from the minor's parent and placed the written permission on file in the employer's office; and
  • Exempt from certain child labor requirements a minor working for a legal entity whose ownership is limited to the parents of the employed minor (or persons standing in place of the parent of an employed minor).

2014 Bill Text IN H.B. 1083.

Effective October 1, 2014, the Maryland bill will:

  • Repeal the requirement that the Commissioner of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, a county school superintendent or the superintendent's designee issue a work permit to an eligible minor;
  • Repeal the requirement that the issuing officer or official must confirm the age of the minor by examining a birth certificate, a baptismal certificate, a school record, or any other governmental document that attests to the minor's age before issuing a work permit; and
  • Instead, provide that a minor's parent or guardian may apply for a work permit by completing an online application.
