Kansas Allows Veterans Hiring Preference, Expands Military Leave Law: Employment Law Manual Updated

Under a new Kansas law, effective July 1, 2015, a private employer may voluntarily adopt a veterans preference employment policy that provides preference in hiring to a veteran as long as the veteran meets the requirements for the position and the policy is in writing and applied consistently to all decisions regarding initial employment.

The new law also amends the state's military leave law to apply to any employee working in Kansas and called to state active duty by any state, not just Kansas. The amendments also clarify that National Guard refers to either the Army National Guard or Air National Guard.
