UPDATE: Kansas City's minimum wage ordinance has been superseded by a state law. The updates in this article have been unpublished or amended accordingly.

The city of Kansas City, Missouri, has passed a minimum wage ordinance.

Effective August 24, 2015, a covered employer must pay a minimum wage of $8.50 per hour to nonexempt employees who perform 20 hours of work within a calendar year for the employer.

The minimum wage will increase to $9.82 on January 1, 2017, to $10.96 on January 1, 2018, to $11.98 on January 1, 2019, and to $13.00 on January 1, 2020. Beginning on January 1, 2021, and every January 1 thereafter, the minimum wage will be adjusted by the rate of inflation.

The ordinance also prohibits an employer or its agent from terminating, demoting, denying promotion to or in any way discriminating against an employee in the terms or conditions of employment in retaliation for the person asserting a claim or right under the ordinance or assisting another person to do so.

Covered employers also must post and display in a prominent location a notice that the business is in compliance with the minimum wage ordinance provisions, including the text of certain sections of the ordinance.

As a result of this development, the following Missouri sections of the Employment Law Manual have been updated:

In addition, the Minimum Wage Rates by State and Municipality Quick Reference chart has been updated, and six entries have been added to the Legal Timetable (for 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021).
