The Los Angeles City Council has passed a new minimum wage ordinance.

The minimum wage will take effect at $10.50 on July 1, 2016, for employers with more than 25 employees and a year later for employers with 25 or fewer employees. It is scheduled to increase every year until 2020, when it will reach $15.00. In 2022, and every year thereafter, the minimum wage will be adjusted for inflation.

The ordinance also establishes notice-posting requirements, new hire paperwork requirements and retaliation protections for employees who engage in protected activities.

Employers that violate the ordinance's minimum wage provisions are liable for back wages and an additional penalty of $100 for each day that the violation occurred or continued, plus interest. Violations of the ordinance's other provisions can result in fines of $500 to $1,000.
