Los Angeles Paid Sick and Safe Time: Handbook Statements Added and Updated

Author: Melissa Gonzalez Boyce, XpertHR Legal Editor

Effective July 1, 2016, employers with 26 employees must provide paid sick leave to employees who work in Los Angeles at least two hours in a particular week and at least 30 days in a year from the beginning of employment. An employee accrues one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. An employee may take up to 48 hours of paid sick leave in a year for:

  • Diagnosis, care or treatment of a medical condition;
  • Preventive care; or
  • Reasons related to domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking.

As a result of this development, the Paid Sick Leave Handbook Statement [Accrual Method]: Los Angeles, California has been added and the California table of contents has been updated.

In addition, Paid Time Off - Hotel Workers Handbook Statement: Los Angeles, California and Unpaid Sick Time - Hotel Workers Handbook Statement: Los Angeles, California have been updated to address the interplay between the Los Angeles minimum wage ordinance and its hotel worker minimum wage ordinance, which provide unpaid and paid sick time to eligible employees.
