Maryland Equal Pay Law Expanded: Handbook Statements Added and Updated

Author: Melissa Gonzalez Boyce, XpertHR Legal Editor

Effective October 1, 2016, Maryland's Equal Pay for Equal Work law will be expanded to prohibit employers from providing disparate wages to employees based on the employees' sex or gender identity. In addition, the law will prohibit an employer from taking an adverse employment action against employees who inquire about, discusses, or discloses their own wages or the wages of another employee, if those wages have been disclosed voluntarily.

As a result of this legal development, the Discussion of Wages Handbook Statement: Maryland has been added and the Equal Employment Opportunity Handbook Statement: Maryland has been updated. The table of contents for the Maryland employee handbook has been updated accordingly.
