Michigan Civil Air Patrol Leave: Handbook Statements Added and Updated

Author: Melissa Gonzalez Boyce, XpertHR Legal Editor

Effective April 5, 2016, Michigan's Civil Air Patrol Employment Protection Act (Act) requires an employer to provide unpaid leave for members of the Civil Air Patrol who are called to respond to an emergency declared by the governor or the president of the United States. The Act also prohibits an employer from discriminating against, disciplining, or terminating an employee because the employee is a Civil Air Patrol member or because the employee is absent from work while responding to such an emergency.

As a result of this development, the Civil Air Patrol Leave Handbook Statement: Michigan has been added and the Equal Employment Opportunity Handbook Statement: Michigan has been updated. In addition, the table of contents for the Michigan employee handbook has been updated accordingly.
