Author: Melissa Gonzalez Boyce, XpertHR Legal Editor

Effective October 1, 2016, the Montgomery County Earned Sick and Safe Leave Law (ESSLL) will require employers that operate and do business in Montgomery County, Maryland, to provide sick and safe time to employees. Under the ordinance, an employer with five or more employees will be required to provide up to 56 hours of paid leave per calendar year. An employer with fewer than five employees will be required to provide up to 32 hours of paid leave and 24 hours of unpaid leave per year.

As a result of this legal development, the Paid Sick and Safe Time Handbook Statement [5+ Employees]: Montgomery County, Maryland and the Sick and Safe Time Handbook Statement [1-4 Employees]: Montgomery County, Maryland have been added to the Maryland employee handbook and the table of contents has been updated accordingly.
