New York City has enacted a new law that expands the protections under its Human Rights law to prohibit employers from engaging in workplace discrimination, harassment and retaliation against interns based on their actual or perceived age, race, creed, color, national origin, gender, disability, marital status, partnership status, sexual orientation, alienage status, citizenship status, or status as a victim of domestic violence, sex offenses or stalking. It also requires employers to provide interns with reasonable accommodations. The new law takes effect on June 14, 2014.

As a result of this development, the New York EEO - Discrimination, EEO - Harassment, EEO- Retaliation, Terms of Employment, Interviewing and Selecting Job Candidates Employee Discipline and Performance Appraisals sections of the Employment Law Manual and the EEO Protected Classes by State and Municipality chart have been updated. In addition, an entry has been added to the Legal Timetable.
