In August, Pittsburgh passed the Paid Sick Days Act (Act), but at that time had not set an effective date. The Pittsburgh Office of the City Controller (Office) recently announced that the Act will take effect January 11, 2016. The one-year period during which an employer with fewer than 15 employees may provide unpaid sick leave runs from January 11, 2016, to January 11, 2017.
The Office also published two required notices that an employer must post in a location accessible to employees:
In light of these developments, the following Pennsylvania sections of the Employment Law Manual have been updated:
- Employee Leaves > Other Leaves;
- Employee Leaves > FMLA;
- Employee Management > Employee Communications;
- Employee Management > Employee Discipline; and
- Recruiting and Hiring > New Hire Paperwork.
These Quick Reference charts have also been updated:
- Paid Sick Leave by State and Municipality;
- Leave Laws by State; and
- Pennsylvania Workplace Labor and Employment Law Posters.
Finally, a Legal Timetable entry has been added.
