A final rule issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) revised regulations regarding the procedures an individual should follow to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) card. The rule also revised certain related documentary evidence requirements of which employers should be aware. The new procedures, which also permit the SSA to implement an online SSN replacement card application system, will help an employer obtain SSNs faster from new employees who do not have an SSN or have lost their SSN card.

The Withholding Taxes section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated to include these new procedures. In addition, How to Verify Social Security Numbers and How to Handle Failed Employee Name/Social Security Number Verifications have also been updated accordingly.
