South Dakota Enacts $7.50 Youth Opportunity Wage: Employment Law Manual Updated

Author: Michael Cardman, XpertHR Legal Editor

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard on March 20 signed a new law establishing a minimum wage of $7.50 for minors under the age of 18.

This new minimum wage for minors is one dollar lower than the $8.50 minimum wage for adult employees, which was enacted through a ballot initiative last fall.

Unlike the adult minimum wage, the youth minimum wage will not be adjusted for inflation every year.

As a result of this development, the Minimum Wage: South Dakota section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated.
