State Health Care Continuation Coverage (Mini-COBRA) Laws: New Chart Added

Author: Gloria Ju

Under the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), employees and their dependents may continue receiving employer-provided health insurance in the event they lose their job or would otherwise lose health care coverage. However, COBRA applies only to employers with 20 or more employees. Many states have passed their own so-called "mini-COBRA" laws that cover smaller employers or may otherwise provide greater rights than COBRA.

To help employers understand each state's health care continuation coverage requirements, XpertHR has added a chart on Health Care Continuation Coverage (Mini-COBRA) Laws by State. This chart summarizes which employers are covered, who is a qualified beneficiary, what events qualify an individual for continuation coverage, how long coverage must be provided and how much individuals may be charged for premiums.
