Most states require an employer to provide each employee with some kind of statement or paystub on payday summarizing at least the wage amount the employee is receiving for the pay period and how that pay was calculated. But many states require an employer to include a lot more information than that.

Moreover, an increasing number of states now allow an employer to provide pay statements electronically if certain conditions are met. In addition, in California, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia, an employer is also required to provide a separate pay rate notice to newly hired employees and to all employees whenever certain pay-related information changes.

To ensure that an employer meets all of these requirements and avoids any kind of penalties for failing to comply, XpertHR has added a new Quick Reference chart, Pay Statement and Pay Rate Notification Requirements by State. The new chart has also been added to two related Tasks already on the site: Add a New Employee to the Payroll and Implement a Paycard Program.
