Supreme Court Decides Affordable Care Act Contraceptive Coverage Case: Employment Law Manual Updated

Author: Gloria Ju

On June 30, the Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) contraceptive coverage mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA) when owners of closely held for-profit corporations have sincere religious objections to providing access to birth control. The Court held, in part, that the ACA mandate substantially burdens corporate owners by forcing them to either violate a sincere religious belief or face severe economic consequences in the form of ACA penalties.

The Health Care Benefits section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated to include this decision.
