Tennessee Unemployment Insurance Changes: Employment Law Manual Updated

Author: Rena Pirsos, XpertHR Legal Editor

An employer's state unemployment insurance (SUI) premium rate depends on whether the employer is considered a new employer or an experience-rated employer. A new employer in Tennessee must initially pay the new employer rate until its account has been subject to premiums and chargeable with benefits for 36 consecutive months ending on the computation date. However, an amended law will allow employers that relocate their business to Tennessee on or after July 1, 2014, to elect to transfer their previous SUI experience rating rather than be assigned the Tennessee new employer rate, if the employer meets certain eligibility requirements. The Unemployment Insurance Tax (FUTA/SUI): Tennessee section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated to reflect this change.
