All industries, including the transportation industry, regardless of size or location, are "fair game" for worksite investigations by the government to ensure that employers are hiring authorized workers. Therefore, transportation employers must verify the identity of their employees and that the employees are authorized to work in the US. In order to do so, employers and employees are required to fill out a Form I-9. During the employment verification process it is mandatory that each employee provide documentation to the employer verifying his or her identity and work authorization. Failure to properly comply with the Form I-9 process can expose an employer to penalties both civil and criminal.
