Virginia recently passed a law (SB 587) increasing the size of employers that are covered by the age discrimination provisions of the Virginia Human Rights Act (VHRA). Effective July 1, 2014, the VHRA's age discrimination provisions will apply only to employers that employ more than five but less than 20 individuals. Currently, the VHRA age discrimination provisions apply to employers employing more than five but less than 15 individuals. The new law will be codified at Virginia Code Annotated section 2.2-3903.

As a result of this development, the Virginia Discrimination, Terms of Employment, Employee Discipline and Performance Appraisals Employment Manual Sections have been updated. In addition, an entry has been added to the Legal Timetable.
