Author: Dorraine Larison, Lathrop GPM

Summary

  • Minnesota law includes unique state child labor requirements relating to prohibited types of work for minors. Employers should comply with all federal child labor requirements and should also follow Minnesota state law obligations. See Prohibited Occupations.
  • Generally, the federal child labor requirements relating to hours of work are more restrictive than the state requirements. The more strict law prevails where the employer is covered by both the federal and state law. See Hours of Work.
  • Minnesota employers are required to have proof of a minor employee's or applicant's age on file. See Employment Certificates.
