Health Care Continuation (COBRA): Vermont

Health Care Continuation (COBRA) requirements for other states

Federal law and guidance on this subject should be reviewed together with this section.

Author: Francis P. Morley

Summary

  • Vermont group health policies, including dental policies, generally must provide continuation coverage to any person whose coverage would terminate upon the occurrence of a qualifying event. See Vermont Continuation Coverage Law.
  • Unlike continuation coverage under federal COBRA, the maximum period of continuation coverage in Vermont is 18 months, regardless of the qualifying event. See Vermont Continuation Coverage Law.
  • Notice of continuation coverage must be included in each certificate of coverage and employers must provide notice to employees. See Notice, Election and Premium Requirements.
  • Vermont group health policies, including self-insured group plans, must include a conversion privilege. See Conversion.
