If an employee who is subject to wage withholding for child support quits, what should the employer do with the child support order after issuing the employee's final paycheck?

Federal law requires the employer to promptly notify the appropriate child support agency or authority that the employee has terminated employment. While some states follow this general federal guideline, other states require notification within a specific time period. In either case, the best practice is to send the notification immediately to avoid any chance that the child support agency or authority will find that the notice was not sent promptly enough. The notification should include the former employee's last work date, last known home address and the name and address of the employee's new employer, if known.
