Is an employer allowed to request a copy of an alien's Social Security card even if it is not used as proof for the I-9?

Yes. An employer should be careful, though. Per US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) guidelines, if the employee does not use the Social Security card as proof of employment authorization for Form I-9, the employer is not allowed to ask for a Social Security card for I-9 purposes. However, an employer is allowed to ask for a Social Security card to ensure accurate wage reporting on the W-2 and other tax filings.
