Author: Beth P. Zoller, XpertHR Legal Editor

Intersex refers to a variety of medical conditions in which an individual is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of being female or male. For example, an individual may appear to be male externally, but have mostly female-typical anatomy internally, or an individual may be born with genitals that are neither completely male nor completely female, or an individual's chromosomal makeup may have both male and female attributes.
