How to Help an Employee With a Substance Abuse Problem

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the US Department of Labor, nearly 75 percent of Americans who use illicit drugs are employed. Individuals with substance abuse problems are generally slow to seek help. However, their problems can affect the entire organization through safety, health and performance issues such as absenteeism and tardiness, injury to themselves or others, and lower productivity. Employers who are concerned that an employee has a substance abuse problem should consider the following steps.
