Podcast: HR Analytics on the Rise - Moneyball Meets the Workplace

The use of analytics to help companies make better decisions based on data is one of the most notable trends affecting HR in 2016. "Most hiring managers will hire somebody like them," says talent management expert Josh Bersin, principal, Bersin by Deloitte, Deloitte Consulting LLP. "But if you analyze by data, you may find those who went to the best colleges and have the best GPAs are not the best candidates."

On this podcast, Bersin discusses easy wins for employers when it comes to analytics:

  • Recruiting;
  • Retention;
  • Fraud and theft prevention; and
  • Sales/Customer service productivity.

"Every single day you are making judgment calls about people," Bersin explains. "Without data, there is going to be bias." As an example, he cites a recent study that found 51% of performance appraisals are driven by a manager's personal opinion rather than the work an employee actually did.

However, Bersin says the biggest misconception employers have is that using data alone is enough. He explains that it takes both time and money to get good at analytics. That's why he advises "starting small." Bersin says, "Pick a problem that's easy to understand where there is a high return on investment." Collecting data will help an employer make a better decision about that problem.

Bersin is a popular blogger for Forbes.com and a columnist for Chief Learning Officer magazine. He has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal, CBS Radio and other leading media outlets.
