Employee Training Now Cheaper for Some Washington Employers

Washington has adopted a law that will ease small businesses' financial burden in providing training to employees under the state's job skills program. +2013 Bill Text WA H.B. 1247. The law will go into effect July 28, 2013.

The job skills program represents a collaborative partnership between Washington employers and the state's two-year college system. The new law allows small businesses to provide the cost of the trainees' salaries and benefits during training, rather than matching the cost of the job skills program grant amount. Larger employers (i.e., those with an annual gross business income of $500,000 or more) will continue to match the cost of the requested job skills grant.

The law also amends some of the criteria used when determining which training applications get priority under the program.
