On Monday, January 5, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) launched its previously announced new competency-based HR certification program by opening registration for the first certification exam.

The exam offers qualified test-takers the opportunity to earn the designation of either SHRM-CP (SHRM Certified Professional) or SHRM-SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional), while keeping any other HR credentials they already have. The new program also offers individuals already certified as HR generalists the opportunity to earn SHRM certification by December 31, by completing a three-step process. Individuals who wish to take the exam are required to have certain combinations of education and work experience in current HR roles for each of the certification levels offered.

According to SHRM President and CEO Henry G. Jackson, "This next evolution of certification helps HR professionals demonstrate that they have the knowledge and behaviors needed to excel in their careers today as business leaders." He also noted that "[b]ased on feedback we've already received from SHRM members and business leaders, SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP will become the gold standard for HR professionals."

The application deadline is March 13 for the first testing period of May 1 to July 15. Applications will be accepted starting May 1 for the second testing period of December 1 to February 15, 2016.

Test-takers may choose from the following methods of exam preparation:

  • Self-study;
  • Seminars, in-person or virtual;
  • University or college-based classes; or
  • Customized staff training and development.

Certifications will last for three years. Individuals may obtain recertification every three years, from approximately 500 SHRM state councils and chapters, by earning 60 professional development credits either through continuing education, supervisor-endorsed work projects or volunteer activities.
