Implement a Workplace Violence Program
- Drafting a workplace violence policy is the first step in preventing violence. The policy should clearly indicate a zero tolerance policy for violence in the workplace and include a clear complaint procedure for reporting incidents of violence affecting the workplace.
- A comprehensive workplace violence policy should also include the procedures to be taken when an incident of violence occurs, including members of the employer's response team, who will care for the victims, and organizing stress debriefing sessions.
- All incidents of workplace violence should be thoroughly documented. This will permit the employer to assess the situation and act accordingly. Over time, the employer may follow up and determine if additional precautions are necessary.
- All employees should be trained regarding what constitutes violence in the workplace and the employer's policy with respect to the same.
