Institute a Secure Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy
- BYOD refers to the increasingly common trend of allowing employees to use their personal devices, such as phones or laptops, to perform work functions. While this can make employees happy and save the employer money, it must be used carefully as it brings with it many security issues.
- Along with the benefits of BYOD, there are some potential pitfalls. For example, if the employee has confidential information on his or her device but lacks the appropriate security measures, the employer may lose important confidential data if the phone is lost or stolen.
- To counteract the security issues created by allowing BYOD, it is important that the employer, working in conjunction with the IT department, create a policy that addresses BYOD and establish effective security measures on employees' personal devices before they are allowed to access confidential information.
