Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

An increasing number of employers permit employees to use their own personal devices (such as smartphones and tablets) for business-related purposes. This is known as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

While there are significant benefits to BYOD (e.g., it may decrease employer costs, raise employee morale and cause employees to take better care of their devices since their money paid for it), there are also potential drawbacks serious enough that critics dubbed the trend "Bring Your Own Disaster". Security risks, privacy concerns and social media account ownership are just a few of the things for which employers should prepare before allowing BYOD in the workplace.

Employers can address these concerns by adopting a comprehensive BYOD policy, conducting employee training and monitoring BYOD use in the workplace.
