North Carolina Expands E-Verify Requirements for Public Works Contractors: Employment Law Manual Updated, Legal Timetable Entry Added

Effective October 1, 2015, amendments to North Carolina's E-Verify law now prohibit any board or governing body of the state of North Carolina, or any institution of the state government, or any political subdivision of the state, to enter into a contract unless the contractor and its subcontractors comply with the state's E-Verify requirements. Previously, the E-Verify requirements for public works contracts was limited to cities and counties. A contract that includes the required term will be presumed to be in compliance with the state E-Verify requirements. Certain contracts are exempt from this requirement.

As a result of this development, the North Carolina Immigration, Form I-9 and Work Visas and Preemployment Screening and Selection sections of the Employment Law Manual have been updated. A Legal Timetable entry has also been added.
