Summary

  • There are various types of leave that may be available to an employee in Vermont. See Leaves of Absence.
  • A Vermont employer may also be required to provide state parental and family leave. See Family and Medical Leave.
  • Vermont's paid sick leave law applies to employers that do business or operate in Vermont. See Paid Sick Leave.
  • An employee may take leave to attend their annual town meeting so long as the absence does not conflict with the employer's essential business operations and the employee provides proper notice of the need for leave. See Town Meeting Leave.
  • An eligible employee may take a leave of absence to perform official duties as a member of the State General Assembly. See Legislative Leave.
  • A covered employer must provide an eligible employee with unpaid leave for the purpose of attending a deposition or court proceeding related to, for example, a criminal proceeding when the employee is an alleged victim and has a right or obligation to appear at the proceeding.   • Employees are considered in the service of their employer when they appear as a witness for purposes of determining seniority; fringe benefits; credits toward vacation; and other rights, privileges and benefits of employment. See Witness Duty Leave.
