Summary

  • Minnesota employers are not required to provide life insurance benefits. If life insurance benefits are provided, certain requirements must be met. See Group Life Insurance.
  • Minnesota law does not permit an employer to require an employee to participate in a life insurance plan, except under certain circumstances. See Employer Contribution and Coverage Requirements.
  • Employer group term life insurance policies issued in Minnesota must provide continuation coverage similar to that available under group health plans. See Continuation Requirements.
  • The policy must also include conversion rights to an individual policy upon termination of coverage under the group plan. See Conversion Rights.
