Are there any special considerations when withdrawing a job offer?

When withdrawing a job offer, an employer should not only withdraw the job offer in writing, but should also thoroughly document the reason(s) for the withdrawal so that, if necessary, the employer can later establish that the withdrawal was not based on a discriminatory or other reason that would violate state or federal law. Additionally, if there is a signed employment contract, the employer should take the appropriate steps to ensure that withdrawal of the job offer complies with any related provisions of the employment contract.
