Succession planning will typically focus on the CEO and corporate direct reports. However, depending upon the size, geographic dispersion and complexity of an organization, succession planning may go deeper into field or line operations.

For example, an organization with a regionalized sales force might include candidates for its Regional Sales leadership positions within the scope of its succession planning process. A multinational firm could look at candidates to move between or within countries.
