What should an employer do if a job applicant tests positive on a preemployment drug test?

If an applicant fails the preemployment test, the applicant generally does not meet the employer's hiring criteria and the employer may withdraw the offer of employment. However, some medications for certain conditions can show up on drug tests. For instance, an applicant who is taking prescribed opiates to control a disability is protected by the ADA, so employers in such cases should be sure to inquire as to the reason for the positive test before taking action.
