Federal law does not require private employers to provide paid sick leave (PSL), but more states and localities are enacting such laws every year. PSL laws mandate that eligible employees be provided paid leave when they cannot work due to their own illness or when they need to care for a sick family member. The ever-growing web of PSL requirements creates a complex challenge for employers, especially those that operate in multiple states.
