Employers often bar employees from handling personal matters:

  • During business hours; and
  • Using employer equipment.

However, as a practical matter, employees sometimes must take care of personal business during working hours. Employers should establish a method of handling such requests and documenting them, in order to defend against claims of discrimination or favoritism.

Events like Cyber Monday and online auctions can distract even the most diligent employees from their work for the better part of a day. Employers can reduce the potential for lost productivity by addressing these issues overtly.
