How to Monitor Employee Use of Company Property Including Vehicles and Cell Phones

Employers often provide employees with computers, cell phones, vehicles or other equipment or property in connection with work-related duties and responsibilities. Because employee use of employer-provided property and equipment can result in employer liability, employers should establish rules regarding proper use and monitor for compliance with employer policies.

However, an employer's right to monitor employee use of its equipment is not absolute. Employers should use the steps below to properly monitor employee use of employer-provided property and equipment.
