Podcast: Why Are Employees Leaving Vacation Time Unused?

With summer being a popular time for vacations, one might think an employer's biggest problem would be finding ways to accommodate a surge of time off and leave requests while keeping their businesses running smoothly. However, a recent Project: Time Off study shows that's anything but the case.

On this podcast, XpertHR Legal Editor Robert Teachout discusses the study and its remarkable finding that 54% of US workers left 662 million vacation days unused in 2016. Teachout notes that a lot of employees who do not use all of their time worry about how much work they are going to have to handle when they come back or fear they will be seen as "replaceable."

"What's interesting is that the higher-level the employee, the more likely they are to use all of their vacation time," says Teachout. "So the bosses know the value of taking time off. The problem is managers and executives think they communicate the value of taking time off to employees much more than employees are hearing that message."
