United Arab Emirates: Health and safety

  • In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) generally, the primary legislation governing workplace health and safety is the Federal Labour Law, while in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) health and safety at work is governed by the DIFC Employment Law and the ADGM Employment Law respectively.   • Employers and employees have various duties regarding health and safety. (See Duties on employers and employees)
  • In the UAE generally, certain specified employers will be required to employ at least one health and safety officer from 1 January 2017. The Dubai Creative Clusters (DCC) (formerly the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone (TECOM)) have their own rules relating to safety representatives. (See Safety representatives)
  • In the UAE generally, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, through its labour inspectors, monitors and ensures due compliance with the provisions of employment law, including in the area of health and safety. (See Enforcement and penalties)
  • Employees who sustain an occupational injury or disease (except for in the DIFC or ADGM) are entitled to compensation in specified circumstances. (See Compensation for occupational injury or illness)
