New Jersey Prohibits Discrimination Based on Race-Based Hair Styles

Implementation Date: December 19, 2019

Effective December 19, 2019, the Create a Respectful and Open Workspace for Natural Hair Act amends the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination to clarify that discrimination based on race includes traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture, hair type and protective hairstyles. Protective hair styles include, but are not limited to, such hairstyles as braids, locks and twists.
