Author: Kimberly F. Seten, Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP

When to Use

Implementing an effective grievance procedure is important in fostering a culture of fair treatment that encourages staff commitment and retention. In a unionized workplace, a grievance process usually is covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

This checklist can help the HR professional prepare, conduct and document a grievance and proceed to its final determination. This checklist should be used in conjunction with any applicable grievance procedure. An employer should complete the following steps in sequential order.
