Open Door Policy

Author: Jessica Sussman

When to Use

Employers may want to include an Open Door Policy in the employee handbook to encourage open communication and feedback. An Open Door Policy means that management is available to all employees to hear their concerns or suggestions. Encouraging employees to bring concerns to management allows an employer to attempt to resolve any issues before such issues escalate into real workplace problems. Additionally, encouraging employees to share their ideas enhances employee confidence and assures employees that they have a voice in the organization and may lead to added value. Regardless of the content of the communication from the employees, knowing what your employees are thinking permits an employer to promote positive change. An Open Door Policy can provide employers with a great deal of important information that employers would not otherwise have access to.
