When to Use This Checklist

An employer should use this checklist when developing and implementing a succession planning process.

Step 1: Determine the Goals and Relevant Metrics

  • Specify why the employer will initiate the succession planning process. Below is a list of possible reasons to undertake the process (more than one may be applicable):
    • Demonstrate senior management's commitment to invest in a planning and development process
    • Ensure key staff have ample advancement and promotional opportunities
    • Enable senior management (and the Board of Directors, if appropriate) to get to know its key people in greater depth
