The following chart summarizes some of the most significant employment-related federal laws applying to private employers. This information can be used to help determine the labor and employment laws with which an employer needs to comply, based on number of employees. It is important to note that there are different definitions of employee under the various laws.

Be aware that there are other federal laws an employer might need to follow not listed here. Whether any of those laws apply to a particular employer depends on factors other than the size of the employer.

Additionally, similar laws at the state level may have different applicability requirements.
