Federal Record Retention Laws

Federal law requires the retention of certain employee records. The following chart lists the specific types of information that must be retained regarding employees, and the minimum length of time such records must be kept. In reviewing the chart below, certain records may be subject to more than one legal requirement. When more than one legal requirement applies, the longest time period should provide the minimum record retention requirement.
