What is the Zika virus?

The Zika virus is primarily spread through the bites of infected mosquitos. The virus can also be transmitted through the exchange of blood or bodily fluids in childbirth or sexual activity. The most common symptoms of a Zika virus are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other symptoms may include muscle pain and headache. Symptoms typically last two to seven days.
